The President of the United States is a liar.

This is not news, but it needs to be asserted on a regular basis. We need to remind ourselves that every day in every speech, Trump is a liar.

Not that everything he says is false. Rather, because Trump lies so often, nothing he says can be believed: not about trade deals, or public events, or national commitments, or personal motivations. He lies about everything and anything, and nothing he says can be trusted.

Underneath this mantle of deceit is the Big Lie: the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. He and his henchmen tried to prove this in court. In 45 separate courts, in fact, and failed. Nevertheless, it is a basic plank in the Trump Party Platform. Nobody working with Trump in this current administration is allowed to publicly dispute this Great Lie.

Once the Great Lie is embraced, all other lies flow easily and naturally. Like the Love Feast of January 6. The Love Feast Lie goes like this: thousands of peaceful patriots gathered in Washington DC to support Trump and celebrate democracy. Their celebration, including Trump’s speech, inspired the people to walk to the Halls of Congress and tour what is known as the Peoples House.

The American people watched this happen on TV screens. We watched as these celebrants got rowdy, busted windows, and punched people. Later, hundreds of this out-of-control Mob were charged and convicted of crimes. It was quite the drama.

But the Trump Lie contends this never happened. Donald Trump said so. That established this Lie as the truth. So, prosecutors have been fired, prisoners have been freed, and pardons have been granted. Plus, the Smithsonian Institution has been told to work this Lie into their presentation of American history.

Now comes race. This week Trump famously said, in reference to the forty some odd people entering the United States from South Africa: “I could care less if they are white or black.”

This is a lie. He cares very much that they are white. For more than 100 days, Trump and his minions have been deporting people of color: people from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Without rationale, without warning, without mercy.

This racist regime has shut down immigration and refugee relief operations for the United States. Except for these white people from South Africa.

This continues the anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion crusade. Trump claims his policy of “shutting down DEI” is his effort to eradicate race in personnel and policy decisions nationwide. This also is a lie.

Everybody knows it is a lie, just like everybody knows his assertions about the election and January 6 are lies. Those in his party who speak out and protest are discharged from any and every duty. Nobody speaks the truth. Everybody repeats the lies.

Yet people still voted for him, saying, “Yes, he distorts things sometimes, but he gets things done and puts us back on the right track.” Even the majority of religious people follow this father of lies, spouting various ways to justify their complicity (none of which quote the words or deeds of Jesus).

Time will tell whether these lies become a permanent part of our national story, of our public rhetoric, or of our pulpit proclamation. Don’t say it can’t happen. The election and reelection of the Great Liar proves that truth can be weak, and people can be fickle.

Liars killed Jesus, and liars can blow up our democracy and our religion.
